In short

What is Margin Call Management?

Margin call management is the daily work of calculating, issuing, answering and disputing variation margin and initial margin calls under each ISDA Credit Support Annex (CSA), then settling the collateral before the custodian's cut-off. Margin Call Management does that work with seven AI agents that compute every call from the signed CSA terms, explain every gap to its trades and clause, and propose the cheapest eligible collateral. The collateral analyst agrees, the collateral manager approves disputes above $1M, and treasury releases every movement.

The problem

Why margin call management still takes the whole morning

Margin call management is a race against the notification time. Every business day a buy-side collateral team values every derivatives portfolio, applies each Credit Support Annex's threshold, minimum transfer amount, haircuts and rounding, issues its own variation margin and initial margin calls, answers the dealers' calls — by margin network, email, PDF and spreadsheet, some in German, French or Japanese — disputes the wrong ones and settles collateral before the custodian's cut-off. The terms in the collateral system were keyed in years ago, and nobody re-reads the signed CSA unless something breaks.

When a dealer calls for more than you owe, the analyst requests the dealer's portfolio file and reconciles trade by trade in spreadsheets, looking for missing or matured trades, valuation differences, collateral in transit, haircut or rounding differences, then argues the clause by email. Collateral is posted by habit, often cash, and excess sits with dealers as cash drag in the fund. Uncleared margin rules Phase 6 brought hundreds more firms into initial margin, Treasury clearing adds new margin flows from December 31, 2026, and a large dispute left too long becomes a report to the regulator.

One margin call, from the dealer's demand to settled collateral

Friday, October 16, 2026, at Quillfield Capital, a fictional global asset manager whose collateral team runs margin for 186 funds and mandates. Brennmoor Securities calls the Global Macro Fund for $14,200,000 under CSA-0417; Quillfield's own number is $9,600,000. Here is how the gap is explained, decided and settled, screen by screen, in the working solution.

  1. 0110:58 a.m.

The agents have worked the book since 07:00

    Ruth Okafor · Collateral manager

Ruth's home screen shows 712 calls today — 389 issued, 323 received, under 352 CSAs — with 641 agreed with no touch (90.0%), 31 disputes open and 38 movements waiting for treasury. The clocks sit above her work: the 10:00 notification time has passed with 22 calls not received, the 13:00 resolution time is 2 hours away, and Pellham's $22.4M dispute is on day 4 of 5 before a CFTC report. Eight items need her, Brennmoor first.

What the agents did since 07:00: “Dispute agent 08:22 — Explained Brennmoor’s $4.6M gap: three missing swaps, a stale curve, rounding.”

  2. 02Today's calls

Every call as a bar: ours, theirs and the gap

    Ruth Okafor · Collateral manager

Each call is one bar on one dollar scale: our calculation solid, the dealer's amount outlined, the gap in dispute shaded, with the CSA's agree zone and threshold marked. The 23 disputed calls, $18.4M apart, sort to the top with Brennmoor's $4.6M first; 26 within tolerance wait for an analyst, and 22 dealers that have not called can be chased in one step.

“JPY curve feed is 12 minutes late. Three JPY calls will re-price when it lands; nothing is agreed on stale prices.”

  3. 0307:10 and 08:12

Our number from the signed CSA, theirs read from an email

    Calc agent and Issuer agent

At 07:10 the Calc agent took Brennmoor's exposure on our valuation, $47,362,400, less the $37,750,000 of collateral Brennmoor holds, to get $9,612,400, and rounded it to $9,600,000 under Paragraph 13(b)(v). At 08:12 the Issuer agent read Brennmoor's call for $14,200,000 from its email, PDF statement and a portfolio file of 1,186 trades, at 0.99 confidence. The call opens as a conversation: each agent's step with its plan, sources and confidence, beside the table of how we got $9,600,000.

Issuer agent: “The gap is above the $250,000 MTA, so I sent it to the Dispute agent.”

  4. 0408:22

A $4.6M gap traced to its trades before anyone asked

    Dispute agent

The Dispute agent ran a trade-level portfolio reconciliation of Brennmoor's 1,186 trades against our 1,189. $4,100,000 is three swaps traded October 14 and affirmed by both sides that are missing from Brennmoor's file — QF-SW-610233, QF-SW-610241 and QF-SW-610257. $430,000 is QF-SW-588102, a EUR/USD cross-currency swap Brennmoor valued on the October 14 EUR curve. $70,000 is rounding. The three drivers add up to the gap exactly, at 0.96 confidence.

The Dispute agent's limits: drivers must add up to the gap; below 0.85 confidence it asks a person.

  5. 05Page 14

The rounding argument, settled by the clause itself

    Dispute agent

Every driver links to its source. The rounding driver opens page 14 of CSA-0417, the 2016 VM CSA under New York law dated February 21, 2017. Brennmoor rounded $14,142,400 up to $14,200,000; the signed annex says nearest, so the right figure is $14,100,000 — a typical keyed-terms difference, now cited to the page.

“(v) Rounding. The Delivery Amount and the Return Amount will be rounded to the nearest integral multiple of USD 100,000.”

  6. 06A question

She asks the call what happens next

    Ruth Okafor · Collateral manager

Ruth types “What if Brennmoor loads the swaps?” into the call. The agents answer with the arithmetic and its sources: Brennmoor's call becomes $14,142,400 − $4,100,000 − $430,000 = $9,612,400, which rounds to $9,600,000 under Paragraph 13(b)(v) — the same as ours, so the dispute closes with no further transfer.

Every answer cites the CSA page, the confirmation or the file it came from.

  7. 0708:24 – 08:25

Collateral optimization: the cheapest eligible asset, and what was ruled out

    Collateral agent and Checker agent

The Collateral agent proposes $10,436,000 face of UST 2.375% 02/15/2031: market value $9,796,795, collateral value $9,600,859 after the 2% haircut. Cash is ruled out because the fund would fall below its 2% liquidity floor on Monday; the 4.125% 10/31/2027 note is reserved for Monday's Treasury clearing margin; the 4.25% 05/15/2034 is on loan until October 21. The Checker agent then re-performs the call, the three drivers and the collateral on a separate model: 7 of 7 checks pass, and the dispute sits below the $20M reporting line.

The Collateral agent proposes only; it never moves an asset.

  8. 0810:32 and 11:06

The analyst prepares, the manager approves

    Jonah Feld and Ruth Okafor

Jonah Feld prepares the partial agreement as the maker: agree the undisputed $9,600,000 under Paragraph 5 and dispute $4,600,000, with the trade detail added to the notice. Because the dispute is above his $1M limit, it waits for Ruth. She approves with a reason code — “Evidence reviewed — drivers are correct” — and the Issuer agent sends the notice to Brennmoor's margin desk by email and the margin network.

“You are the checker. The movement goes to treasury; you cannot release it.”

  9. 0911:15

Treasury releases what someone else approved

Marcus Lindqvist · Treasury operations lead

The Settlement agent built movement MV-77390 against Brennmoor's verified settlement instructions. Marcus sees the asset, the collateral value of $9,600,859, the receiving account and who approved it, then releases it to the custodian with a reason, well before the 14:30 cut-off. The release button is locked for anyone who agreed or approved the call.

“Four eyes: the agreement and the release are by different people.”

  10. 10Same day

Brennmoor agrees; the dispute closes the same day

    Issuer agent and Settlement agent

At 12:20 Brennmoor replies that it loaded the three swaps, re-priced on the October 15 curve and agrees $9,600,000; the Issuer agent reads the reply and dispute DSP-2210 closes. The custodian confirms MV-77390 settled at 13:42. Every step — agent and person — is on the hash-chained audit trail with its reason and evidence, ready to export as one evidence pack.

Audit trail: “Hash chain intact” — retained for the life of the swap plus 5 years.

Built on the engine

7 agents. Each with one job, and hard limits.

Seven agents compute, issue, match and explain every call from the signed CSA; the analyst agrees, the manager approves disputes and treasury releases.

Agreement agent

Reads every ISDA CSA, IM agreement, credit support deed and local-law annex — in English, German, French or Japanese — into Paragraph 13 terms cited to the page, keeps the original beside the English, and flags any term where the collateral system differs from the signed document.

  • Never changes a term: legal raises, the manager checks
  • Below 0.90 confidence, sends the agreement for review
Calc agent

Computes exposure, initial margin from ISDA SIMM sensitivities and every call from the signed terms: threshold, minimum transfer amount, independent amount, haircuts and rounding.

  • Every call is re-performed by the Checker agent before it is issued
  • Works from the signed agreement terms
Issuer agent

Issues our calls before each notification time; reads incoming calls from the margin network, email, PDF and spreadsheets in any language, matches them to our number, and drafts chasers for dealers that have not called.

  • Agrees with no touch only inside the published tolerance rule
  • Never disputes on its own
Dispute agent

Reconciles both portfolios behind any gap above tolerance, prices each driver, cites the CSA clause, drafts the Paragraph 5 dispute notice in the dealer's language and tracks the CFTC and EU reporting clocks.

  • Drivers must add up to the gap
  • Below 0.85 confidence, asks a person
  • Never sends a notice without maker and checker
Collateral agent

Proposes the cheapest eligible collateral for each delivery and recalls excess, respecting eligibility, haircuts, concentration, fund liquidity floors and assets reserved for repo or Treasury clearing margin.

  • Proposes only; never moves an asset
Checker agent

Re-performs every call, dispute driver and collateral proposal on a separate model family, and checks eligibility, settlement instructions, sanctions screening and the reporting line.

  • Cannot approve
  • A failed check stops the call
  • Disagreements go to a person with both arguments
Settlement agent

Builds movements against verified standing settlement instructions, tracks settlement with the custodian, and computes interest on cash collateral at each CSA's rate (SOFR, €STR, SONIA, TONA), reconciling the dealers' statements.

  • Never releases: treasury does, and never the person who agreed
Collateral analyst, manager and treasury

Agree, approve, release; never the same person. The agents propose; a named person decides.

Ask in plain words

Ask any call why — or tell the agents what to do

On every call, dispute and agreement, ask in plain words or give an instruction. Answers cite the CSA page, confirmation or file behind them, and nothing goes to a dealer until a person confirms.

Why are we $4.6M apart with Brennmoor?

We are $4,600,000 apart with Brennmoor on the Global Macro Fund. $4,100,000 is three swaps affirmed by both sides on October 14 that are missing from Brennmoor's portfolio file; $430,000 is QF-SW-588102 valued on the October 14 EUR curve; $70,000 is rounding: Paragraph 13(b)(v) says nearest $100,000, Brennmoor rounded up. Our call is $9,600,000.

Which disputes are close to a reporting line?

Two disputes are near a reporting line. Pellham Global Markets, $22,400,000 on the Total Return Bond Fund, is on day 4; as a swap dealer Pellham must report it to the CFTC after 5 business days. Northcote Bank, EUR 16,100,000 on the Euro Liquidity UCITS, is on day 9 of 15 under the EU rule. Both are escalated to the dealers, owner Ruth Okafor.

What if Brennmoor loads the swaps?

If Brennmoor loads the three swaps and re-prices on the October 15 curve, its call becomes $14,142,400 − $4,100,000 − $430,000 = $9,612,400, which rounds to $9,600,000 under Paragraph 13(b)(v): the same as ours, so the dispute closes with no further transfer.

Send chasers to every dealer that has not called

22 expected calls have not arrived by the 10:00 notification time. I have drafted a chaser for each dealer, in its own language, from the margin desk contacts on file. Nothing is sent until you confirm.

Questions

What collateral teams ask about margin call management.

How does it resolve margin call disputes?

Above tolerance, the Dispute agent reconciles the dealer's portfolio file against ours trade by trade, prices each driver — missing or extra trades, valuation differences, collateral in transit, haircuts, FX fixings, rounding or IM sensitivities — and the drivers must add up to the gap. It cites the CSA clause and drafts the Paragraph 5 notice with the undisputed amount, in the dealer's language. Below 0.85 confidence it asks a person, and no notice goes out without a maker and a checker.

Does it handle both variation margin and initial margin?

Yes. The sample book has 352 CSAs and 64 IM agreements, and initial margin disputes are explained the same way: the Ravensworth IM dispute of $3,200,000 is traced to 14 equity vega sensitivities missing from our own SIMM run for options booked October 9. On that one the dealer was right, and the solution says so.

Does it check the collateral management system against the signed CSA?

Yes. The Agreement agent reads each CSA and local-law annex into terms cited to the page — threshold, minimum transfer amount, rounding, eligible collateral and haircuts — and flags any that differ from the collateral management system. On the sample book it found three, including Halden Fjord Bank, keyed with an MTA of EUR 500,000 where the signed CSA says EUR 250,000; legal raises the fix and the collateral manager checks it.

How does it track CFTC and EU dispute reporting deadlines?

Every dispute carries its reporting clock. A swap dealer reports a dispute over $20 million not resolved within 3 business days (dealer counterparty) or 5 (others) to the CFTC under 17 CFR 23.502(c); in the EU, disputes over EUR 15 million outstanding for 15 business days go to the national authority. The solution warns 2 business days before a line, and the head of collateral sees every dispute near one.

How does it handle collateral optimization and excess collateral?

For collateral optimization, the Collateral agent ranks eligible assets by what they cost the fund and rules out assets that would breach a fund's liquidity floor, are on loan, or are reserved for repo or Treasury clearing margin, giving its reasons. It also finds excess collateral with dealers every day: $63.4M across 41 CSAs on the sample day, with return calls issued at 07:44. It proposes only; treasury moves the assets.

Do people stay in control of agreeing, disputing and releasing?

Yes. The agents compute, read, explain, propose and check; they never send a dispute, release a movement or change a term. The analyst agrees and prepares, the collateral manager approves disputes above $1M with a reason code, and treasury releases — never the person who agreed. Every step is on the hash-chained audit trail.

How long does it take to go live?

The Agentic Solution Engine builds and deploys it from your requirements and documents — your signed CSAs, approval limits and a sample of past calls and disputes — and it goes live once every quality gate has passed. First-time setup connects your systems, reads every agreement and runs 10 business days in parallel with your current process; in the working solution the parallel run matched 97.8% of calculations, and 100% after 3 term fixes.
